Academics

Music

Students are encouraged to express their musical tastes, preferences and goals to aid in the selection of music and instruments. Through group performance, students utilize various sound sources and compositional procedures, using elements of technique and theory, while gaining insight into the music’s history, role in culture, mechanics of performing and recording as well as the effect of their performance on the other performers and on the audience. Playing together is where the tire meets the road – theory and practice united.

English Language Arts

The Grade 9 English course will continue to develop the students’ literacy skills. Through reading, writing, and speaking students will be able to develop their critical understanding of different texts and big ideas found in literature. Students will be taught through a variety of situations to

  • Use language, and understand how to use proper communicative skills to interact and collaborate with their peers.
  • Read, analyze and interpret a variety of texts (written, spoken and media), and be able to make personal connections to them in order to gain a deeper understanding of the text or the theme being taught.
  • Produce a variety of texts that demonstrate their understanding of classroom content through different mediums (written, spoken, media).

Study Methods

This course is designed to improve your efficiency as a student and in all areas of life. Examining your current study methods and learning style, as well as your challenges, you will gain insight and methodology pertinent to you as an individual. With your life and school projects as the model, this course gives you the opportunity to immediately implement strategies that work for you

French Second Language

Students will develop their ability to interact exclusively in French through presentations and discussions, writing French-language texts, and reading and analyzing French-language texts. In addition to the grammar elements, the student will read two novels, watch films, and other texts and media. The students will write informative texts, poetry, and critiques. Discussions and debates on various topics will be added to the presentations and vocabulary activities to complete the student's skills.

Basic French

Students will be introduced to the foundation of the French language. Through speaking and pronunciation practices, reading exercises, learning grammatical structures and memorizing vocabulary, students will develop the basic skills to speak, read and write in French.

Mathematics

The Grade 9 Mathematics course involves teacher instruction and demonstration, student participation, group work, individual study and practice and formal testing. The curriculum follows the textbook, Vision 9, which offers a series of exercises and contextual problems that help students integrate and apply mathematical reasoning. Part of the curriculum involves students solving situational problems which allow students to apply mathematical concepts in daily life situations. Topics covered include: real numbers, equations and inequalities, relations and functions, solids, area and volume, isometry and similitude, probability and statistics.

Science and Technology

The Science and Technology program creates a single discipline by integrating scientific fields (physics, ecology, astronomy, geology, biology) and various technological fields (e.g. mechanical design, medical, food and mining technology) studied in the context of cultural references. Focus on the human body and its’ systems is the main theme throughout the course.

History

Students will begin their first term with an in depth look at the society of the first occupants in Canada. We will examine the characteristics of the two main indigenous groups and connect them with the newly arrived French. During the second and third terms we will be exploring the French and English societies with focus on their demographic, economic, cultural and political aspects.

Physical Education

Throughout the course students will understand demonstrated athletic techniques, improving individual athletic abilities, as well gain knowledge to participate in varied athletic games. Students will work towards mastery of the following activities; Badminton, Volleyball and Intro to resistance Training. As well as Health related components (Flexibility, Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Endurance)
The program will aim to develop the 3 PE competencies.
