Educational field trips Sec 4

McGill Discovery days

McGill offers many initiatives to introduce students to different fields of studies. This includes women in engineering events and career exploration days of which our students always take part. At NSA we are always looking for ways to expose our students to as many opportunities as possible.

French Theater Outing

Each year, the French department organizes a day at the theater outing for the entire school. This past year, NSAL's annual A Day at the Theater outing took place at the Maison des Arts de Laval. Organized by the french department, students and staff got to hone their French skills by attending a play entitled Nordicité. Using video projections, puppets and giant polar bear suits, the play was a visual poem taking the audience on a journey between myths and Nordic realities.

Speak Up

Each year, North Star Academy students attends the EMSB's annual Speak Up Montreal! spoken word competition at Marymount High School. We have had our students win this competition and others place amongst the top speakers in the region. This wonderful platform allows students to express their ideas and thoughts freely.

Jewish Rehab Center

Each year, a group of our students have the opportunity to attend a day long workshop at our local Jewish Rehab Center. The students hear from professionals in all disciplines and got to see firsthand what being in physical rehab is like and how people in this profession make a difference in peoples lives

Destination Quebec- LCC trip

Destination Quebec is an important annual event held at Lower Canada College. Our students take part in a number of workshops to discuss and contemplate the effect of globalization in various fields such as, technology, business, the environment, social justice and health. Our students leave with a renewed interest and understanding on how globalization shapes our world as well as their role in the process.

Electrium at Hydro Quebec

As part of the sec 4 curriculum, student have the opportunity to go behind the scenes at a local Hydro Quebec power plant. Students experience real life links between this important Quebec economic platform and their science curriculum.

Workshop and Factory visit (Dorel)

Dorel is a multi-million dollar company that takes polymers from china and make mattresses. The technology aspect of the secondary 4 ministry curriculum is new since the reform. As part of this chapter students learn about materials, textiles and their properties, constraints and deformations, linking, degrees of freedom, motion transmission and transformation systems. Students in secondary 4 got to see real-time application of class material and explore in a hands on way what they learned in class through the factory visit and in class workshop. Physics students interested in engineering got to attend as well!

Ottawa Museum of National History

In preparation for their June exam, the secondary 4 class, and a few select secondary 5 students, go to Gatineau to visit the Canadian Museum of History. In doing so, the students are able to revisit important events that we touched upon, not only in class, but for review for the end of the year exam. In addition to the field trip, the students have to complete an assignment to further help them identify the important information needed for the end of year exam. This year, the assignment had the students take pictures of ten events we examined during our course and write the causes and consequences of each event. This allowed the students to use their critical thinking skills to identify multiple aspects of Canadian history to form the narrative of the course.
